1. Hard wired detectors required upon sale or transfer of residential property. (Chapter 113 Fire Prevention Article 1)
2. Homes sold or transfered since 1985 are required to have hard wired interconnected smoke detectors.

Note: smoke detectors located with in 20 feet of a kitchen or bath room and/or laundry room must be Photo electric type.
1. Make sure the detector works properly and have not been painted over (all yrs)
2. Test one and they all should go off (all yrs)
3. Must be mounted securely (all yrs)
4. In the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms (all)
5. In all bedrooms (1998-2006)
6. In each story of a dwelling unit, including basements and cellars, but not including crawl spaces without utilities such as Heating units, and uninhabitable attics (all)
7. In residential units of 1,200 square feet or more, automatic fire detectors, in the form of smoke detectors shall be provided for each 1,200 square feet of area or part thereof (all)
8. Any smoke detector located within 20 feet of a kitchen or bathroom containing a tub or shower must be a photoelectric type (all)
9. In unfinished construction, detectors should be mounted on the bottom of floor joists(all)
10. Smoke detectors in a room with a ceiling sloped greater than one foot in eight feet horizontally, should be located on the high side of the ceiling (all)
11. Smoke detectors should not be located within three (3) feet of a door to a bathroom containing a tub or a shower or the supply registers of a forced air HVAC system(all)
12. Unless otherwise recommemded by the manufacture, no smoke detector shall remine in service after 10 years(all)
