Questions on Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Question: When did this all go into effect?

      Answer: March 31, 2006  M.G.L. c148,s.26F1/2 - 527 CMR 31.00

  Question: Do all homes need CO alarm?

        (YES) A: Every dwelling,building or structure including thoes owned and operated by the Commonwealth, occupied in hole or part for residential purpose that contain Fossil Fuel burning equipment or have enclosed parking need Carbon Monoxide Detection.........

   Question: What are Fossil Fuels:

       Fossil Fuels: Oil burners, gas appliances, wood burning, gas or propane, coal, pellets, corn-husks burning fireplaces or appliances,or have a gararge attached to the home.

   Question: Which detectors can I use, there are so many out there?

        A: UL approved                   

   Question:    Where do I need Carbon Monoxide detectors?

       A: One in each level including Habitable portions of basement, cellars and attics, but not including crawl spaces.

           ( this means) 1. One in the basement if it is finished.

                               2. One on each level of the home, and or within ten feet of any bedroom door.

                               3. Mounting: follow the Manufacture's instructions.

   Question: If I'm a landlord what are my responsiblities?

       A: At a mininum: maintain, test, repaire or replace, if nesessary every CO alarm upon renewal of any lease term for any dwelling unit or on an annual basis which ever is more frequent.

   Question : Is there any charge to have someone show me where to place them or find out how many I may need?

   A: No, just call the Fire Station anyone should be able to answer your questions or at least get you to some one who can.
